An innovative new sport, known as Wing Foiling, has now been introduced at Bristol Water’s Cheddar Reservoir.
Wing foiling is similar to kite and wind surfing – but differs because it allows participants to glide over the surface of the water.
Bristol Water have thrown their support behind the introduction of wing foiling at the Somerset reservoir, which supplies Bristol and the surrounding areas with drinking water.
The reservoir is one of the first inland venues in the region to offer the thrilling new sport and is a safe place to practise due to the flat water.
The club, which is open seven days a week during the summer months, offers classes for beginners with one of their three qualified instructors.
Cheddar Watersports – formally Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club – also offers sailing, wind surfing, paddle boarding and kayaking.
Debbie, Club Secretary at Cheddar Watersports, said:
“We’re so pleased to be offering wing foiling and we’re looking forward to seeing lots more people try this amazing water sport in the future.
“The reservoir is such a fantastic place to try a variety of water sports, and as it’s inland it’s a lot safer for beginners too.
“We’d like to say a big thanks to Bristol Water for supporting our idea.”
Kirsty Dunford, Conservation, Access and Recreations Manager at Bristol Water, said:
“It’s great to see the uptake of this exciting new watersport at Cheddar Reservoir.
"It looks like an exhilarating sport to take part in, and many people walking around the reservoir enjoy watching those making the most of being out on the water.”
Cheddar Watersports operate on the reservoir through a carefully managed approach to keeping everyone safe - members of the public are not recommended to use the lake unsupervised.
