Bristol Water is giving 1,750 free water butts to customers as part of its new Come Rain or Shine campaign to support customers with using water wisely all-year round following the warmest summer on record for the UK.
Starting today (27 October) Bristol Water customers can order a free water butt kit to remove the need to use treated drinking water in their gardens.
As well as a 200-litre water butt, the comprehensive kit includes a tap, stand, lid, and downpipe connector – compatible with 68mm round and 65mm square downpipes – giving customers everything they need to install this important water-saving device at home.
Designed with quick assembly in mind, the kit arrives neatly boxed with detailed instructions and the durable recycled polypropylene material means the butt integrates seamlessly into any garden or outdoor setting.
Water butts are a great way to routinely save precious water from roof run-off, and can also help protect sewer networks by holding back additional flows during heavy rain.
Paul Dommett, Bristol Water’s Water Efficiency Delivery Manager, said: “As we move out of summer and into the more traditionally wetter months of the year, autumn may seem like a strange time to be talking about water efficiency. However, a record warm summer across the UK saw extra demand across our service area and as a result storage is lower than usual for this time of year.
“Each water butt we’re giving away will store 200 litres of rainwater, which means a combined total of 350,000 litres of water will be stored every time these butts refill. This presents a fantastic opportunity for our customers to help reduce the demand on drinking water to help our reservoirs recharge in time for next summer.”
Using water wisely – Come Rain or Shine
As well as offering free waster butts to customers, the Come Rain or Shine campaign is supporting customers with advice on how to make small changes that can add up to big water savings around the house – also saving money for customers on a water meter.
As well as practical tips for saving water, the campaign supports customers with advice around water meters, checking for leaks and information on what Bristol Water is doing to help storage recharge over the winter.
This includes driving down leakage to continue to have one of the lowest levels of total leakage in the UK water industry.
With 1,750 butts available, the kits will be sent to customers on a first come, first served basis and a postcode checker is in place to make sure all orders are within the Bristol Water supply area.
