Saving water in the home
If we waste less water, we are more efficient with our water use. This not only saves water but also money through reducing both your water and energy bills. Did you know that just by fixing a dripping tap could save you £18 a year, not to mention 5,500 litres of water from simply flushing down the drain?
Our water saving tips:
Turn off the tap whilst brushing your teeth and save 18 litres per brush
Did you know? – Brushing your teeth with a running tap uses 9 litres of water a minute. Keep to time with one of our free toothy timers.
Did you know? – Having a typical length shower uses a shocking 62 litres of water. Why not put on your favourite tune and make sure that by the time it’s finished, you’re done too?
Did you know? – Washing your clothes with a typical washing machine uses an average of 112 litres of water a week. Save clothes up rather than washing a few at a time.
Did you know? – Steaming vegetables rather than boiling them retains more of their nutrients and uses much less water. Once cooled, that water can also be used on your plants.
Saving water in the garden
Water uses energy to be pumped, heated and treated, so why not try using rainwater instead of your tap water to wash your car, water your plants and other garden/outdoor activities? Better still, get a water butt or put buckets out to catch rainwater for drier days.
Use the water from your washing up, shower and even your bath on the garden and save up to 20 litres per 2.5 meters of garden, per water session.
Did you know? – This type of water is known as ''grey' water and despite containing detergents, is ok to use on plants thanks to the soil's ability to filter out what it doesn't want. In fact, the detergents can even act as a mild fertiliser.
Tip: Get a water butt and use rain water instead of your garden tap and save thousands of litres a year
Did you know? – In an average year in the UK, we see 1200 mm of rain fall. That's equivalent to thousands of litres. Collected in a water butt with a lid to stop leaves and insects, this water is perfect for use on the garden and even for cleaning your car with.
