The water we all use has an impact on the environment, even when water isn’t in short supply.

Water comes from the environment and takes energy and raw materials to purify and to supply.

This creates a carbon footprint for water – the carbon footprint of supplying the Bristol area in 2009 was over 45,000 tonnes of CO2.

If we include the carbon footprint of hot water use in the home, it’s a lot higher: in fact, the carbon footprint of domestic hot water in the UK is the same as the aviation industry.

Bristol Water consistently meets its targets for leakage reduction: one of the remaining ways we can minimise the environmental impact of water is to help our customers reduce the amount of water they use.  We want to help our customers cut their water footprint – and cut their carbon footprint.
