Report Date - Week Ending 28/09/2009
Weather
A very settled week with mainly light winds and often warm & sunny. Very dry and the lack of rainfall over the past few weeks has affected the levels at all the lakes. All are now falling fairly quickly. The calms and sunshine has given rise to more algae at Blagdon though Chew is clearing very slowly. Cooler nights have meant a slight fall in the surface water temperature which now stands at 14°C.
Blagdon
An increase in algae again this week has made the fishing a little more difficult over much of the lake. Bank fishermen are still finding some fish close in at Green Lawn to Rainbow and Rugmoor to Orchard Bay on the North Bank. Boat anglers are finding things a little harder although a few have found pulling a larger lure or minkie an effective method. Few moving fish seen although the mornings do seem to be the better time to fish. Best fish reported this week is a 7.04 rainbow taken by Malcolm Fisher from the bank. Well done Malcolm.
Chew Valley
Fishing is still a little patchy at Chew. The bank fishing improvement noted last week appears to continuing with some limits reported from the North Shore and Picnic Areas and some other good bags from Walley and Woodford. At times there are plenty of fish moving close in shore but they are often difficult to tempt. Although there are still buzzers hatching most of these fish appear to be feeding on corixae. Boat fishermen have found the sport very changeable with good catches reported from areas on one day and no fish seen in the same place on the following day. On the flat clams fish have been noted moving over much of the lake but are very hard to take. Most boats are concentrating in the deeper water off the Dam, Aerators, Picnic Areas and North Shore. Here nymphs and dries have proved the best patterns fished on or near the surface. Any small nymph with a bright thorax or tag is worth a try as well as Black or dark Bits Emergers and Hoppers. Also watch out for fry feeders. In places large shoals of small coarse fish are beginning to move in close to the banks and there are fish following them in. Look for the diving gulls which are also taking their share of this autumn food source.
Barrow
It seems that the Barrows is the best of the waters for bank fishing at present with some much better catches reported on nymphs and sometimes dries. All the lakes seem to be worth a try.
Litton
The lower lake is still the most popular at present especially as the top lake remains well down. Floating line with nymphs, mini lures and bright gold heads is the method most used although in the calmer conditions it's always worth having a try with dries.
