Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) 2004

Update March 2010

The Environmental Information Regulations 2004 (EIR) came into force on 1st January 2005 and apply to public authorities. Public authorities are required by these Regulations to provide information on a wide range of environmental issues, to anyone making a request. On 12 March 2010, The Information Commissioner’s Office ruled under reference FER0265082 that water undertakers such as Bristol Water are not public authorities for the purposes of these Regulations. The details of that decision can be found in the Commissioner’s letter – the decision does not affect the way in which Bristol Water is regulated by other Government agencies such as Ofwat, DWI and the Environment Agency.

In spite of this ruling, Bristol Water will continue to respond free of charge to any reasonable requests for information – you may in many cases be able to find this information on our website. Requests can be made directly to us and do not have to be in writing: they can be by telephone, in person or e-mail. We do not normally make a charge for the information we provide, but if we believe we will have to make a charge for this information (for instance, if it will take a long time to collate or require a large number of photocopies to be made) we will let you know this beforehand.
