Be a Water Wizard

As this section shows, saving water could save you money. But, in any case, sensible use of water helps to protect the environment and keep prices down.

If you would like more tips on how to save water in the home or out in the garden, plus see a list of leaflets we have available go to the Saving Water section, under the Environment heading here on the web site.

IN THE BATHROOM

  • A 5 minute shower uses less water than a bath.
  • If you have an older toilet cistern, with no displacement device or dual flush, place a 1 litre plastic bottle full of water in the cistern. It will still work efficiently, and could save as much as 4,000 litres of water per household per year!
  • Put the plug in the basin when you wash your hands, and use a glass of water to rinse your mouth after cleaning you teeth, rather than leaving the tap running.

IN THE KITCHEN

  • When you buy a dishwasher or washing machine look for eco friendly models which use much less water.
  • If possible wait until you have a full dishwasher or washing machine load or, if you can’t wait, use the economy programme if there is one.
  • Don’t prepare vegetables or wash up under a running tap. Fill a bowl with water instead.

IN THE GARDEN

  • Collect rainwater for washing the car and watering the garden.
  • Water your garden sensibly. Call us on 0845 702 3797 for a free copy of
“The Gardening Year in the West and Water-Wise Tips”.

CHECK YOUR SYSTEMS FOR LEAKS

  • Replace worn washers in dripping taps, repair the ball valve if your cistern is overflowing and check your central heating system for leaks.
  • Make sure everyone in the house knows where the stop cock is and keep the name of a plumber handy.
  • If the supply pipe connecting your property to the main is leaking, call us on 0800 801 011.
  • If it is the length of pipe that is your repsonsibility, under our LeakStop scheme* you may be eligible for assistance with repairs.
